This incident only highlights what is well-known:
Pakistan’s rapid decline into Taliban-style Islamism.
One night last week a group of
radical Islamists stole into the remote Darel valley and blew up the
three-room schoolhouse and tried to burn down four other schools in the area.
I was given a warning by the
mullahs [...]
Several points raised in
this news item on Outlook India set me thinking.
For one, this prejudiced article masquerades as a news report: its
not-too-subtle mudslinging on a widely respected and revered religious head is
hard not to notice.
Ravikiran has a nice entry on Yazad’s blog about Nehru and IIT.
The point about most people is that because somebody benefitted from studying in the IIT, it is somehow the duty of the person not to criticize its creator, Chacha Nehru.
Why? Applying this analogy to Subrata Roy Sahara (read my yesterday’s post) who organized a [...]
First, Read this
and this.
My own experience with the Sahara India Parivar began in the form of an uncle
who had (still does) invested a lot of money in their Fixed Deposit schemes.
They’ve scrupulously adhered to their claims of paying interest, etc, have (so
far) redressed all his complaints and are generally keeping him happy. Their
success story is [...]
This
must be one of the most shamelessly written eulogy to the
party that is responsible for all ills that India faces today. Of course, one
couldn’t expect anything better from the dedicated boot-licker of the party
masquerading as an intellectual. That the Court has ruled in favour of Rajiv
Gandhi has reinvigorated this worm’s sympathies and provided an opportunity [...]
The Kolkata
Libertarian has some interesting muses on why the NATO no
longer holds any significance in the world of today. And rightly so.
Big surprise, NATO is reluctant to play any sort of
serious role in either Afghanistan or Iraq….
And then he proceeds to write rather scathingly–and justifiably so–about
Europe–medieval and modern.
I [...]
Norman Geras writes about
the Banality of Evil, essentially basing
his construct upon the writings of Hannah Arendt on Adolf Eichmann, one of the
more eminent butchers of the Nazi regime. His theme is essentially this: more
important than understanding the psyche of killers from psychological and
sociological perspectives, is the need for ethical responsibility.
This was that, by [...]
For some reason, I was reminded of a movie I saw not long ago; it’s a classic for all ages, a film by Gurudutt, his best in my opinion: Pyaasa (The Thirsty).
The entire movie is set against a backdrop of disillusionment, pathos, existential meaninglessness and worldly treachery. Gurudutt uses the life of a poet [...]
Why inflict on the poor citizens of India, this deadly brother-sister duo
whose only claim to fame is that they belong to the Dynasty? But Sagarika
Ghose says it so well:
Rahul
and Priyanka Gandhi have condescended to step into the dirt tracks of Rae
Bareli and Amethi and address a press conference. Impossible to miss [...]
Preface
Jivha’s dreams of a Secular India make for interesting reading. I like the arguments that he puts forth to present his case; and I appreciate his zeal in sticking to his self-imposed motto: taking stands, which is difficult given the nature of differing opinions, knowledge (or its lack thereof), and stands. I for one [...]
