Pakistan Poses a Greater Threat

Over to Alan Sullivan at Fresh Bilge, who makes very perceptive observations about Sectarians with Nukes aka a Nuclear Pakistan in response to a comment I had left on his blog. He says:

Although Pakistan supplies manpower to the international jihad, it is also a victim of Saudi subversion…

I beg to differ slightly. Pakistan is not a victim of Saudi subversion. This is probably a conclusion Alan might have derived (and I’m guessing) from what is dished out by the media. If anything, people on this side of the world know that the dictators of Pakistan– Zia Ul Haq onwards–have been very ingenious. At various Islamic conferences throughout the world, they have successfully projected an image of Pakistan as a truly, nay, PURE Islamic country. This helps it garner enormous funds that usually end up:

1. in the pockets of the current dictator

2. as fuel for more jihads

3. both #1 & #2

For the un-indoctrinated, Pakistan was carved up as a land to be inhabited only by the pure. In fact, the word Pakistan itself means Land of the Pure, where infidels have no place. And I remember reading elsewhere that Pakistan defines itself in relation to India, a definition where negation is inherent. India is this, and Pakistan is defined as NOT this.

Musharraf cannot be expected to keep faith with India or anyone else. He’s just trying to survive.

Partly correct. Musharaff is trying to handle too many pressures, but he cannot be underestimated. He’s a shrewd negotiator; with the US he plays the “war on terror” card deftly, making a regular pretence of “clamping down on the jihadis at home” while at home he indulges them. A simple question before I close this entry. In their quest to make Pakistan a “pure” land, various self-proclaimed judges and mullahs pass strictures such as the famous rape law which requires the (raped) woman to have at least four male witnesses who saw her being raped. Can, or will Musharaff take any action against these holy judges?
