The President has done us Proud

Again. The analysis I’ve linked to is an equally interesting read. And to those who want to read the full speech, Outlook India has it here.

A famous Sanskrit verse says he who speaks rarely, his voice carrries the most weight. This is nowhere more applicable than in the case of Kalam. Unlike other past Presidents some of whom let themselves be used as doormats of the Congress party, especially during Indira’s reign, Kalam has spent his tenure doing meaningful work. His innumerable bon homies with children throughout India is a case in point. You can’t breathe sense into adults: no matter what they’ll continue to spit on roads and piddle on pavements. It’s easier to mould the minds of children. Ask the Mullahs who take children under their wings and turn them into monsters.

And the President has shown remarkable courage right from the time Maino wanted to become Prime Minister right up to the recent Jharkhand constitutional tomfoolery. And as the commentary says,

Almost like a spoilt child, whose cookie is taken away, Chatterjee said that the executive intervened to restore order in Jharkhand, and not the Supreme Court. In fact, Manmohan Singh got cabinet approval to sack Shibu Soren after his pro-term speaker stalled the confidence vote in contempt of the Supreme Court. If Soren had not been sacked, the Supreme Court would have been held in contempt, and it would have led to a situation of extreme confrontation between the Supreme Court and the executive, and the executive wisely stood down. It had indeed no other option. Instead of recognising that, what kind of Lok Sabha speaker would goad the executive to confront the Supreme Court?

By speaking tough against parliamentarians and legislators, and in his presence, the President has put the speaker in his place.
