Chronicling the City

Monday, 4. July 2005 - 12:09 PM

Is the name of the new category I’ve created. Because I’m a shameless admirer of Bangalore, I felt I’ll be doing it a disservice–in fact, I’ve done the disservice in the 3+ years of my blogging history by not writing about stuff I observe everyday out here.

I also hope to serve the other noble cause of preserving these chronicles for posterity. Corner House which serves delicious desserts has a nice collection of photographs of Antiquity Bangalore, plastered all over its walls. Some of these pictorial gems date as far back as 1860. That in part is my inspiration for this new adventure.

The fact that I also plan to maraud your eyes with not-so-clear pics from my camera phone shouldn’t I hope, deter you from reading the chronicles. For starters, here’s a photo of the city at sunset.

Sandeep, I’ve been living in Bangalore for the last three years now.
I am increasingly becoming disillusioned about the city’s (and its
administrators’) ability to respond to an increasing population,
increasing # of vehicles, increased strain on its resources etc.

I’ve lived in Madras nearly all my life and I’m willing to assert that
Madras has coped much better than Bangalore in terms of growth. Of
course, Bangalore hasnt grown, it has exploded. So it is natural for
that process to be tough. But I fear Bangalore may have let things drift
    for far too long.

I don’t dispute with your statements, Jagadish. That’s the reason I’m a “shameless” admirer of Bangalore. The problem is with the political scene here. They care a damn. Or simply pretend that they care. :(

Perhaps they need to fix the bus transport system first. The metro/mono
can come later. I find local buses in Bangalore to be costly, pathetic
and totally not worth the money.

The other central problem is that most traffic here seems to completely
depend on moving through 4-5 major roads. Artery roads are uncared for.
I live around Airport Rd. and I am fairly sure that if the roads leading
out of/into Airport Rd. were developed just a little more, people wouldnt
use Airport Rd. so much, reducing the traffic hugely.

You cant blame only the political establishment. The people must take
their share of the blame as well. I do, for one. Which is why I’ve
stopped taking my vehicle to office and rely on transport provided by
    my employer.
