Careful Sania…

Of what you say in public. Or you might land straight into trouble like your elder sister, Khushboo.

”Look, whether it’s before or after marriage, people should have safe sex. And about pre-marriage sex, you can’t stop people and hence the best way is to play it safe,”

The last time around, a nasty controversy erupted over the trivial issue of your skirt. Your risk is greater compared to Khushboo. A fatwa poses a far greater threat than some crazed morons burning cinema posters and filing suits. The skirt issue had raised some responses that are truly worrying:

The Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Hind in Calcutta issued a fatwa, or edict, before Mirza played there in a tournament last month, saying she would be stopped from participating if she didn’t wear proper clothing. Security was beefed up and the event went off without incident.[...] Her role-model status spurred the state of Chhattisgarh to propose that its 285 state-owned seminaries learn from books that would include a chapter devoted entirely to Mirza’s accomplishments. It would have reached more than 17,000 schoolchildren. But the proposal was withdrawn because of threats against the authors.

Please, Sania desist from all temptations to make statements. If you must, let them be related to tennis.

Concentrate instead on winning the next Wimbledon.
Update: I warned you. Thanks for the link Sakshi.

No no no no! This is not just about Sania – this is about whether we have free speech in India. And why is it OK for Narain to say the same thing and not have a fatwa issued against him? We all have a right to our viewpoint – the ulema have the right to issue fatwas, the public has the right to ignore them or obey them, and Sania and Karthik have the right to say whatever crosses their rather sensible minds – without fear of physical harm.
