Acutually I luiked Ruhani's approach to the problem, and if you do not like the idea of nationalisation then here are two pieces you must read. one is in favour of nationalisation http://www.indiblog.com/131/save-the-indian-farmer/ and the another one is a op-ed in tehelka which asks some very genuine questions - "Suddenly the forgotten farmer is everywhere. The Congress Working Committee puts rural concerns on the frontburner. All of that within the space of four days last week. What’s up? Not so much concern for the farmer, no, it is all tied up much more with the political anxieties welling up in the Congress. If the farmer isn’t India’s aam aadmi, who is? If the government is not bothering about the farmer, who is it bothering about? If the eye of the dispensation is not on its manifesto, whose manifesto is it on? Or, at any rate, a signal that it is working on correctives. Fair enough. But where does that leave our agrarian crisis?"

The first step to solve a problem is to acknowledge that there is indeed a problem, to understand that there is a problem, to understand its magnitude.

With some time on my hands, I went to the Other India blog today. This is run by some notable bleeding hearts. Just go to their blogs and you know what I mean. I believe there is an entire train dedicated to one of them. I had once replied to one of the blog contributors regarding 'misguided terrorists'

[...] Sandeep exhorts those concerned with the farmers-suicide issue, to stop continually mourning the deaths and reciting sob-stories, and suggest focus on some solutions instead: On the Vidharbha issue, talking about the problem seems to have become the biggest obstacle–crying over the spilt milk seems to occupy time, effort and column inches/web space rather than running to the milkman to buy fresh milk.
Bawling about the dead might get more people involved in the relief-efforts.

I understand your point of view - that bawling usually remains beneath the activation energy barrier (i.e. it targets people who have very little power to change things and people who re not willing to give up their well-laid out lives to help).

Making a fuss about the dead is one way to get other people to help out. But by making a fuss, if you aren't attracting enough people to do more than the work you would be doing if you weren't fussing, then the ROI is not justified.

Its all about the effect that your actions have.

Some good communicators would do better at recruiting helpers.

There is no general answer.

it is the rich or the poor. How else would you explain all those suicides in Vidarbha? It is sad to see so many bloggers make highly distasteful claims that the loan waivers to farmers is wrong because it means higher taxes on 'taxpayers'. (Take this one for example) They also talk about how the farmers are suffering because of fixed rates offered by the govt. for agricultural produce. Have they ever realised that this is only to keep inflation down, for the benefit of the 'tax-paying' middle class? So
