Sour Grapes and Jesus

I don’t take any particular interest in following US national politics but incidents like this beg to be blogged.

Sen. Satveer Chaudhary, a practicing Hindu, was re-elected in District 50 last week on the Democratic ticket, netting 63 percent of the vote. But rather than placing a call to concede the race, his Republican opponent Rae Hart Anderson instead offered him an e-mail concession that he said read like an attempt to convert his religious beliefs. [...] Anderson’s former campaign manager, Barbara Black, told us Anderson wrote the e-mail because “Chaudhary is not Christian, and he needs to find his soul.”

Satveer’s defeated opponent is typically representative of the loonies that Bush has surrounded himself with. This reinforces an observation an American scholar made more than a year ago: American society is increasingly becoming polarized.

Rae’s statement–sermon–hints at denying Satveer his victory on account of his being a non-Christian. In other words, Satveer’s victory is not a big deal because he’s a Hindu: the same refrain–only my God is true, the others are condemned, and so Satveer should convert. Here’s an appalling excerpt from the full text of her email:

Jesus Christ lives in His earth family by His Spirit. He said He’d be back, and He said it first. You could invite Him to make the race of your life ‘eternal’. God waits to be gracious to each person that knows they need to be forgiven. Do you? I think you do. Just ask. Christ won eternal life for you and said so. Take Him at His Word. Take some time to get acquainted with this power-filled Jesus… (Italics in original)

The collective souls of the citizens of Minnesota are (rightly) better off for not electing this nut.
