Apart from for their somersaults, our Left comrades are known to bark. I can only hope this stunt statement from Prakash “24″ Karat is for real.
A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh dared the Left to withdraw support to the government over the Indo-US nuclear deal, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat hit back, saying the Congress should be asked “if it wants to run this government”….This government is run on our support. But why do you keep asking us if we would withdraw support? Why don’t you ask the Congress if it wants to run this government?”.
The Left has taken on the role of a strong Opposition rendering a confounded BJP jobless. Where the Left is concerned, suspicion is always a virtue. Especially when it talks about things like “national interest” and “national security.” One only needs to remind them of their “position” on Arunachal Pradesh…
Let’s see how this bark ends up.

The Left Front’s bark is worse than their bite. In the end, the Left Front will do what Congress tells them to do, because the alternative would be worse: walking in the political wilderness. The Third Front is a no go.
And I don’t care how many seats the Left Front may have won in Kerala, Tripura and West Bengal, the Left Front is a dying force. As an idealogy, many members of the Left Front have embraced capitalism, so their prouncements about protecting the poor ring hollow.

On another note…why does the US feel it needs to “contain” this country?

From your statement, one would infer that capitalism is inherently bad for the poor. I dont believe it is true and I am not sure if that is what you are trying to say. The free market is today the best option to help the poor IMO.

@Niraj : There is an interesting corollary to the need to protecting the poor. In order to protect the poor, it is essential that the poor exist. Hence the left sets about perpetuating poverty, through its bankrupt ideology, so that it can act as their champion.
@Palahalli : I am not aware of the US ever having stated a desire to “contain” this country

Shailendra,

It doesn’t need to. We are adept at self-containing. We have a few hundred years’ worth of history to prove that.

@Sandeep : As of now its the Left that is trying to do most of the “contain”ing :D. Its obvious to most sensible people that the left’s main objections stem from :
a) a rabid Anti Americanism,
b) concern about Chinese sensitivities
