Barbar Indians’ latest post carries an interesting observation
The first involves the following statement by Narendra Modi:
“I want to tell the government in Delhi, lets sign a year-long pact, you don’t take any money from us and don’t give us any aid. And then we will show the Centre how we run the state. You all tell me, am I not right,” he was quoted as saying.” [link]
It is not known if these were the exact words uttered by Modi, but calling these statements seditious is quite ambitious. As a matter of fact, Congress bigwigs have not made any public statements, leaving the hatchet job to foot soldiers like Manish Tewari.
One of the problems with a perverted public discourse is that words are thrown around with no fore or afterthought. So it is with sedition. Jyoti Basu had famously thundered in his heydays that West Bengal under him would secede from India if the BJP ever came to power. The last time I checked, the then-secular government at the Centre took no action against Basu.
To make this clear Sandeep, I thought it will be interesting initially since the argumentation with respect to a federalist’s position will be against your nationalist or whatever else you call it argument.
However, you have made it clear that you were only interested in showing how a spokesperson of a political party was doing his job. That may be of interest to the other party, its supporters or supporters of this party. I am not any of those and thus don’t care.
But yes, I am sad. It’s a post modern state of life.
Some of the debates on internet go like this:
(A) type a
one goes – hey, why’s M being accused of eating shit when B’s also eating shit
At which our intellectuals climb down their perch taking a moral high ground and sermonize: I don’t care what B’s doing, but are you okay with A eating shit?
(B) type b
Another type of debate’s like:
one goes –
hey, why’s B (currently in power) robbing/rioting etc..?
Pat comes the blessing to the devious deed in question (mostly from arm-chair intellectuals claiming to be impartial),
‘didn’t M also do same when he was in power‘?
So you see, in a nutshell, you really can’t win.
As they say, some are wise and some otherwise.
Ok, you are happy.
Nilu,
Pleading guilty?? Sigh! I debated a few times before responding to your comment. Your latest response confirms that silence from my side would’ve been the most appropriate response.
You’re sad.
So Sandeep, you are essentially pleading guilty for the accusation that you have merely accused a political party of playing politics. That is all I wanted — the rest is meaningless t me.
Others: I don’t care what Jyoti Basu or Modi or Lalu did or asked or said.
“Jyoti Basu had famously thundered in his heydays that West Bengal under him would secede from India if the BJP ever came to power”
Nilu, would you care to comment?
Nilu,
Simple. Lalloo demands that he be allowed to print currency – press keeps quiet => No sedition. Modi wants a one year suspension of federal funding, and state Xfer to center. Not sedition.
Nilu,
>>Apart from accusing a political party of playing politics,…
The scope of this post is limited to exactly that. You’ll have to wait for another post for an answer to your question.
Interesting kaangeya — you are agreeing with the position because someone you dislike had also seeked it. So far, the impression I get from the author of this post is also similar.
Will the author clarify?
I agree with Modi’s statement. Especially because the entire press kept quiet when the joker of Bihar Lalloo Yadav demanded that he be allowed to print currency to finance his deficit.
Apart from accusing a political party of playing politics, do you agree with Modi’s statement?
This is interesting.
