Tanaji Malsure lead an exactly similar commando mission to capture Kondana fort from a ruthless rajput who converted to Islam to win favors from fanatical and wicked Aurangazeb. He was sent south to quell marathas and took control over the impregnable fort of kodana from local mughal governor and made it his head quarters. The first phase of the mission was very successful. The sentry and patrol forces of the fort didnt even know what hit them. But in the second phase maratha commandos were outnumbered by the mughal and allied forces that were camping at the fort. Tanaji lost his life in the 3rd and final extraction phase but not before high valued enemy targets were neutralized. Shivaji addressed his court next day saying that "the fort was won but a lion was lost". And thus kondana fort was renamed by Shivaji as Simhagad in Tanaji's honor.

Its interesting to see that Monitor lizards were repeatedly used to capture impregnable forts. Would like to know how far this practice dates back.

Ta Ra Su's novels like Kambaniya Kuyilu, Rakta Ratri, Rajya daaha, Tirugu Baana, Hosa Hagalu, Vijayotsava, Kasturi Kankana & Durgastamana are the most famous books in Kannada novel history. I feel like TaraSu devoted his life to get the Posthumous award for Durgasthamana. What a hero was Madakari Nayaka? ats off to him. I have read all these novels 6-7 times each of them. I simply cant wait to get any more info on Chitradurga Nayaka's. I love these fellows in the history !!!!!!!

Re comment #8

Yes, Tanaji Malusare, Shivaji Maharaj's trusted lietenant, used a giant monitor lizard (Ghorpad in Marathi) to scale some fort on a mountain. Once he got up on the fort, he assisted others to come up, and they captured the fort for Maharaj from islamic aurangzeb's minions. I think it was Raigad (fort).

I didn't know this story about Nijagal. However, there is
another fantastic story about a brave queen of Nijagal. It
is one of the short stories (saNNa kathe) written by our
beloved Masthi Venkatesha Iyengar. The story is called
"Nijagallina Rani". Please read it.
