There is no other way to say this: every blow hurled at Narendra Modi only seems to add to his strength. In the 60+ years post-Independence, no other politician has been the target of sustained vilification and motivated witch-hunting as Narendra Modi. Yet, after every such attempt, he has managed to only emerge stronger. An immediate answer to this phenomenon of moving from strength to strength is the fact that his actions are the only, and powerful critics-silencers. However, the other and more crucial answer is this: exemplary leadership deriving out of the force of personal character. Scan the entire political landscape of India and find us a leader in the true sense of the word.
And this aspect—the force of personal character—is something no intellectual, academic, oped-writer and analyst will tell you because to the progenitors of this class only one leader existed in the Indian political realm till eternity: Jawaharlal Nehru. Expectedly, the dumb intellectual offspring of this class will yell at the “deification” and “idolization” of “personalities” but will not-so-secretly support The Dynasty. Now what are the distinguishing traits of everybody in The Dynasty from The Chacha to The Queen to her Bachelor Brat? Everything other than personal character.
Somebody once said that the history of mankind is simply the aggregation of biographies of eminent people. Everybody who scaled gigantic heights were men of outstanding personal character—from Kautilya to Vidyaranya to Vivekananda to Washington to Lincoln, all of them led by example: when they spoke, people listened and when they wanted something done, people did it without question. No matter what age we live in, fundamental human motivators will remain unchanged as long as humanity exists on this earth.
In an earlier post, I asked:
why does a place like Chennai go berserk with applause over Modi’s speech or why do university students in Bihar abuse and hurl chairs the Crown Prince who insults Narendra Modi?
Name exactly one other leader in India’s political landscape today who evokes this kind of spontaneous support and adulation. Which other Chief Minister openly invites—repeatedly, on TV, newspapers, etc—people to “come to Gujarat?” This is exactly what India for these 60+ years needed: a leader who delivers first and then merely explains how he was able to deliver, instead of hurling empty promises, or to reverse RajivSpeak: hum banake dikhaye hai. The Queen simply talks about “no tolerance for corruption” but continues to preside over the biggest loot this country has ever seen while Modi simply blacklists business houses/people that offer bribes to set up shop in Gujarat: they aren’t given a second chance. This in many ways follows Kautilya’s dictum that evil should be plucked from the very roots and giving a second chance means allowing the danger to lurk beneath the surface. And so, even the most vocal critic of Modi will accuse him of every real and imaginary crime other than corruption and lack of economic development. The best proof is the fact that almost all media outlets kept mum about Gujarat’s staggering development until recently—there are obvious limits to how long you can fabricate facts and/or close your eyes before said development starts to become physically visible.
Today, the last of the strident critics of Modi—and I’m not talking about malevolent monsters like Teesta—while they grudgingly admit his accomplishments, still try and clutch at the 2002 Straw. In a way, the wheel has turned a full circle. Of late, it’s become kinda evident that the opposite of what the Academia-Intellectual-Media (AIM) Complex say about Modi is true.
This transformation didn’t happen overnight.
For most of his 10-year tenure, Modi answered his critics with… silence. He let his work do the talking and allowed the law to take its course. Every investigation has only revealed that he is not guilty of what the self-appointed judges of the AIM Complex continue to accuse him of. But then the Cottage Industry has to survive and so it does what it does best: Exhibit 1. While these worthless AIMs repeatedly peddle the tired old lies, Modi has grown from strength to strength. He’s become a must-have in events like the India Today Conclave and the HT Summit to name two despite the fact that these events are run by outfits that are demonstrably anti-Modi. But there’s a reason: his speeches are fresh and derived from his experience in governance. For instance, when he says that “skills get jobs but knowledge creates jobs,” it holds a familiar echo: knowledge was what always made seekers from all over the world pour into India in the past. When he says that development must be made a mass movement, it rings as refreshingly different in an environment that’s been infested for long years with ruthless socialism, meaningless slogans and crass freebies in that order.
There’s no better demonstration of the power of personal character than this transformation.
Also the fact that he has inspired the Chief Ministers of other states—including Mayawati (yes!)—to give governance, not statues, a chance. There’re only so many years that you can get elected to office on the planks of caste, divisiveness, and hatred. When a Mayawati-voter goes to Gujarat and sees what he sees, he will demand similar things in his state.
In the end, the “ghost of 2002” continues to haunt just the AIM Complex despite their attempts to hoist that ghost on Modi’s shoulder. The ongoing delay tactics to postpone the Supreme Court judgment on the issue just shows their fondness for the Forces of Darkness.
And if this sounds like an unabashed encomium to Narendra Modi, it is. Show me a better candidate. I might change my mind.
Thanks for writing the Narendra Modi Biography I think you keep updates in it.

Sandeepjee,
“And if this sounds like an unabashed encomium to Narendra Modi, it is. Show me a better candidate. I might change my mind. ”
I certainly admire Narendra Modi and what he has been doing for Gujarat. However, I would like you and your readers to compare another leader’s accomplishments with those of Modi. It is Nitish Kumar of Bihar. For Modi, it was probably not very difficult to transform Gujarat because of the very nature of the Gujarati people ( Their co-operative character is described in the autobiography of S.L. Bhyrappa – Bhitti).
Gujarat has always been the best even much before the time of Modi – I remember how investors used to say in 1980s when IPO prices were regulated, that any company based in Gujarat was worth investing in.
However, in the case of Nitish Kumar, Bihar was at the bottom of the list of failed States before he took over. Most of the good people had abandoned the State and migrated elsewhere. My cousin, a colonel stationed at Ranchi some 15 years ago used to say that even the Army men out in the city for shopping used to return to the barracks before sundown as there was no guarantee of safety. Another distinction is Modi has no family whereas Kumar does but has not allowed them any advantages accruing from his power. Thus, Modi has an advantage there. Remember BS Yeddyuappa who dreamed of becoming another Modi, today blames his sons and son-in-law for his ruin.
So, are you going to change your mind?
Sandeep. Stumbled on your blogs. Good work!
When I saw the title of this blog, thought I’d seen it before, only to realize that I’d seen this title about four days ago in the India Express. Uh oh! Guess who’s been reading your blogs? Seema Chisti. Her piece on Digvijay Singh is titled the Rise and Rise of Digivijay Singh. I can almost hear her say ‘Well copyrights don’t apply to titles.’
True! But at least it proves these so-called journalists are reading what their critics say.
Your blog is really a brilliant work Sandeep! You are a thought leader! Keep doing the great work!
He is one off the few chief ministers who has made development and progress as his face.In gujrat you will see at least 10 cities that you can compare to mumbai. Can you say the same for any other state?

Just the same way that the Islamist Setalvad “condemned” Godhra train-burning but qualified it with a “but..” clause that “explained” why the train was burnt, would you like to perform a “I condemn, but ..” routine as well?

The rise of Modi is well and good. But will he be able to tackle stuff like this? http://www.wahsarkar.com/?p=380
Comrade Ranger,
Again you demonstrate succinctly that both leftwing and rightwing extremists talk the same language. There are people who say they have been aroused to anger and violence by the squalid conditions in Kashmiri Pandit refugee camps. Nathuram Godse claimed to have murdered Gandhi after visiting the refugee camps of people driven out of West Pakistan. Emotional blackmail, and claims of virtuousness (“the underdog! I’m moved by the plight of the underdog! the tribal! the prole !”) are the stock-in-trade of extremist of every hue. Violence is not justifiable otherwise, but since violence is a tool of the ideology, it needs to be justified. What do your extremist Paki pals blame 26/11 and other terrorist killings of Indians on? The Kashmiri Muslim underdog! Atrocities by Indian Army! What is Afridi’s bigotry (a mindset representative in fact of the Pakistani society) blamed on? Gambhir! It is instructive to note that the commies, the biggest claimants to being representatives of the oppressed of the world, murdered 80 million people, and people like you still speak their language.
Childhood indoctrination is the most effective and deadliest mode of mind control. Islamic fundamentalists are a ready example, but alas, some commies are not far behind.
Forgot to mention: These stats in the prior post (first para) were culled from a ‘Times of India’ business article, so the actual figures may be even better, but lets not nit-pick
The comments in the second para are my own observations.
Aggregate stats on Gujarat
———————————-
Gujarat’s gross state domestic product ( GSDP) grew by 11.58 per cent during 2010-11, with all three sectors — agriculture, industry and services — demonstrating an impressive double digit growth rate for the first time since 2005-06. Latest official figures, prepared by the directorate of economics and statistics, show that agriculture, which had stagnated in the preceding two years, performed the best with 16.73 per cent. The service sector came next, growing by 12.24 per cent, while the industrial sector grew by exactly 10 per cent. What is particularly significant is that, for the first time in the last one decade, Gujarat managed to achieve a double-digit rate of growth in two consecutive years.
The numbers for agriculture in particular are important, because Gujarat has a large arid area. A smart combination of supply-side (scarce water and power resources) and demand-side management (energy consumption and yield) has boosted effectiveness and minimized wastage, and created new ‘best practices’. Hopefully, other states can use this knowledge to boost their agricultural sector.
@loneranger ” Cricfan – You cant be so innocent to presume that the trail was fair. ”
You aren’t disputing the damning facts that indict Sen – In all democratic countries this would more than likely to be punishable by life-imprisonment or worse. In countries like Pak or China, he would have be summarily executed. Look at how the world’s leaders are pursuing Assange relentlessly for his “leaks”, which is trivial compared to Sen’s unpardonable act.
So far the gist of your argument is: “Govt harassed tribals. So it’s ok for Sen to help a terrorist who killed tribals”. Kindly put an end to this sham. You want to help tribals and I strongly support and wish you well on that, but please stop trying to defend a terrorist’s courier using some crazy logic. It looks silly and shreds your credibility.
Anand – Its very fine to pass judgement sitting in some farway place with all the luxuries available. I have gone , lived with tribals in chattisgarh and I can bet if you can live one day in that kind of environment. Here we all crib and get stressed on such minor matters that when you look at their life one will feel ashamed. All your intellectual talks on justifying violence will go for a toss. In general , we all look at the other person’s life and say oh no he was so wrong, if I was in his place, I would do so and so. Tribals have a way of life and we or the government has no right to ask them to amend or take away the lands by giving money. Go and check in any of the police station how a tribal is treated there. Worse than a bull which pulls the cart.
Cricfan – You cant be so innocent to presume that the trail was fair. In our country, if you happen to see the amount of corruption in the judiciary you will flee the country the next moment. It is sickening. God help those who get caught and dont have any contacts.
Hello Comrade Ranger,
I was talking not about Bajrang Dal but about some guy named Bajrang, who — one of the commie funders of Tehelka was arguing a few years ago — was evil incarnate, though he and Comrade Father Binayak Sen are driven by the same fanaticism and same contempt for innocent life. But anyways good that you brought up Bajrang Dal.
Your comment is quintessential evidence that when it comes to justifying violence, extremists of all hues, whether leftwing or Bajrang Dal, speak the same language. It is a boilerplate: There are aggressors/exploiters and there are victims, and the victims are forced to take up violence against their aggressors.
This is a recurring pattern. There is this extremist blogger who has to rage against Gambhir because he has to justify Afridi. He has to project India as ugly as Pakistan because (among other things) he has to kiss some Paki butt. The deception that people put themselves under saddens me, given they can so easily avail of professional help.
@loneranger: This is not related to NaMo and his development in Gujarat, for which you have have provided no answer, and your PR theory has been debunked. Still, … you wrote “Binyak sen has never supported the armed struggle of maoists at any point of time. ”
Hmm, let’s see:
1. Binayak Sen meet Maoist terrorist Narayan Sanyal in prison, 33 times between May end – June end of 2007 (roughly once a day).
2. Arranged for rental home, bank a/c & such stuff for this terrorist who’s killed hundreds of innocent Indians
(1) and (2) are established facts (his wife certainly agrees) that totally rejects this conjecture you put forward. Furthermore, he was convicted in a democratic court after being given a fair trial, something which Maoists like Sanyal never gave to others, including the scores of tribals he killed. Precisely because without couriers and facilitators like these, the Bin-Ladens and Sanyals of the world cant operate and kill effectively.
This theory you put forward has failed too, but feel free to try.
Anand – The tribals were forced to take up arms and that is the fundamental difference between them and Bajrang Dal. For bajrang dal, thuggery is a way of life and it perhaps gives them some kind of kick in life. Binyak sen has never supported the armed struggle of maoists at any point of time. He has condemned voilence of any kind but those things will not come to your attention as its easier for you to ignore it. Moreoever, he has not been passing any classified information to the maoists rather he was and wants to be peace broker.
